Best 3 iPhone Strategy Games in 2014

These days, the app store market is flooded with similar products that can be irritating to sift through in order to find a game that’s actually worth your time. In the strategy fantasy genre, three titles have stood out amongst the flood of Age of Empires style wannabes: Empire: Four Kingdoms, Game of War – Fire Age and Dark Ages 2.

Empire Four Kingdoms

These three titles have the potential to be some of the top iPhone games available, each with unique selling points and capable of delivering a sound gaming experience. I’ll be talking about them each in turn and then comparing all three to see which is the top iPhone strategy game.

All three titles largely stick to the same formula: build a city, raise your army and conquer the world – but as it’s an iPhone game you’ll need to wait patiently while these things get done.

There are options for alliances, interactions with other players, paying to make things go faster, you know the drill. Each of the games has very similar mechanics and game play so in these individual sections I’ll be talking about unique points to each title. Real time strategy (RTS) games aren’t for everyone, they involve a lot of time and micromanaging which can be mundane to some. However, if you are a fan of RTS then all three of these games deserve your attention.

Empire: Four Kingdoms

Empire: Four Kingdoms is an extremely polished title with great attention to detail. The graphics are simple yet well drawn and reminiscent of the classic PC games it takes it’s inspiration from, from the world map to your lowly villagers, the look of the game is spot on.

The interface is straightforward, friendly and much more self explanatory than some of the other titles, it’s easy to pick up and start playing even if you’re new to RTS. Waiting times are alright, but as usual players who aren’t willing to pay will end up losing out. Out of the three, Empire: Four Kingdoms probably has the best social features which have been hugely developed to allow real-time warfare with your friends (and enemies!). Overall, the game is charming, easy to play and very addictive.

Game of War – Fire Age

Game of War – FA is set in an Ancient-Greek-esque setting, which it shows off with exquisite graphics and smooth animations, this is something new and exciting as most other titles stick to a medieval-fantasy feel. The game has been largely well received by the fanbase who played the previous titles but there is a consensus from players new to the franchise that it is difficult to get into and there isn’t enough explanation of how to play.

Game of War Fire Age

I found the interface a bit clunky on an iPhone as there is a lot going on, it’s definitely one of the more complex RTS games available for iOS and not a casual gaming experience like Empire: Four Kingdoms. As with all iPhone games, waiting times are an issue and the game really slows down for players not willing to invest money after the first few days.

The game’s social features are really what makes it stand out, with an ingame chat interface for chatting privately with your alliance or with the rest of the Game of War world. The chat box includes a very cool and unique feature where it translates other players messages for you into your preferred language, so that you can literally talk to anyone, anywhere.

Dark Ages 2

This is an iOS exclusive title, meaning that it’s got a smaller following because Android users can’t join in the fun and has limited the MMO aspect of the game as there are simply less people playing.

Dark Ages 2

Aside from that, Dark Ages 2 is a very nice looking game with detailed and well-drawn graphics with a much more modern and fantasy based look than the other two titles; Android users are probably very jealous they can’t play. The game is intuitive, fun and highly addictive, whilst looking fantastic and progressing smoothly compared to other games in the genre.

There is a lot of free stuff to be had, with a mystery chest refilling every 6 minutes and players can often find gems, the P2P currency, which makes the P2P content much more accessible. In addition to this generosity, there is a free speed up feature for any of your tasks with under 6 minutes remaining. This feature should be a legal requirement for all RTS iPhone games as it makes the experience much more enjoyable and immersive. This is a great game and it really is F2P.

Summary : Top 3 iPhone Games

All of these titles will provide you with a solid RTS experience but they will provide different and unique experiences within that. If you’re a social gamer Empire: Four Kingdoms is the way to go, with the best alliance and co-op features.

However, if you don’t mind a more limited MMO experience then Dark Ages 2 is the clear winner as it provides a clean, fun experience whilst steering clear from many of the common annoyances of iOS games. If you’re a fan of the genre, all three titles are worth your time as they really are some of the top iPhone games.
